The Arctic Monkeys' drummer, Matt Helders, has put an end to the swirling rumors about the band's future, declaring that music-making is an enduring passion for the group. In a recent interview with BBC Radio 1's New Music Show, Helders revealed that the band's involvement in the new charity album, Help(2), was an easy decision.
"It was a no-brainer for us to join," Helders said. "We love making music, and this project gave us a chance to do something new and reunite after a couple of years apart."
But here's where it gets controversial... Despite the band's enthusiasm for the charity album, Helders clarified that there are no immediate plans for a studio reunion. However, he left the door open, stating, "Making music is something we love to do, and we'll always do it."
The Sheffield-based band, comprising Helders, Alex Turner, Jamie Cook, and Nick O'Malley, has a dedicated fan base that spans over a decade. Their debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, became an instant classic, setting a record as the UK's fastest-selling debut. Since then, they've released a series of chart-topping albums, including Favourite Worst Nightmare, Suck It And See, and AM.
"The studio is our happy place," Helders explained. "It feels natural for us to be there, creating music."
And this is the part most people miss... Despite the band's success and enduring love for music, they've taken breaks to pursue individual projects. Their latest release, The Car, reached number two in the UK album charts, but it had been a while since their last collaboration.
"Time will tell if this project inspires us to create more," Helders said. "We went into it knowing it was a one-off, but we had a lot of fun recording Opening Night. It's definitely something we'll always do."
Arctic Monkeys superfan Robbie Lees believes this project could be a turning point for the band. "Maybe this is the spark they needed to get back into the studio and think long-term," Lees said. "It's great to hear that Matt calls the studio their happy place."
Another fan, Gracie Eccles, echoed these sentiments, saying, "Hearing that they're not hanging up their guitars is music to my ears. It's incredible to see them support War Child and come together for this cause. It shows that it's not just about the music for them."
