Australia's Extreme Heatwave: Record-Breaking Temperatures in Adelaide and Beyond (2026)

Unbearable Heat: Australia Day Records Shattered in Adelaide

As the mercury soared to unprecedented heights, Adelaide and its surrounding regions faced an Australia Day like no other. While the city itself set a new record, the true scorching heat was felt in places like Ceduna, where temperatures climbed to a staggering 49 degrees Celsius.

The observations data revealed a shocking 49.5C in Ceduna just before 4:30 pm, marking a new high for this location, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM). This beat the previous record of 48.9C set in 2019.

Meteorologist Jonathan Fischer described it as "day four of an ongoing heatwave across South Australia." The hottest temperatures have been concentrated in the northern and western parts of the state, with Port Augusta reaching 48C on Saturday.

Fischer emphasized, "It's the most widespread and intense heatwave we've seen since December 2019."

Adelaide's West Terrace station recorded temperatures above 44C, breaking the previous Australia Day record of 41.1C from 2006. "We've officially broken the record for the hottest Australia Day in our climate records," Mr. Fischer confirmed.

But here's where it gets controversial... temperatures were expected to peak later in the day, with tops above 48C recorded in places like Port Augusta and Tarcoola, and above 46C in Port Pirie, Roseworthy, and more.

The BOM predicted an overnight low of 31C for Adelaide, the hottest since December 2019. "Keep the air conditioner on and look out for yourself tonight," advised Mr. Fischer.

A change is expected mid-week, bringing milder conditions, but tomorrow is forecast to be another day of extreme fire danger. The State Emergency Service (SES) warned that strong winds, combined with the extreme heat, increase the risk of falling trees.

The Country Fire Service (CFS) declared tomorrow as a day of "extremely high fire danger," with total fire bans in large parts of the state. And this is the part most people miss... the BOM said the heatwave conditions would ease mid-week, but temperatures tomorrow could challenge January or even annual records across the state.
