Australia's tourism industry is cautiously optimistic about the recovery of Chinese tourism, despite ongoing economic challenges in China. While Chinese travel to Australia has shown a 16% increase in the past year, it still lags far behind pre-pandemic levels. In 2019, over 1.4 million Chinese visitors spent $12.4 billion in Australia, but the current figures are only around half of that. This disparity is attributed to broader economic pressures in China, with Professor Huang Songshan of Edith Cowan University noting that shrinking wealth may prompt Chinese travelers to cut back on international trips. However, the Australian tourism sector remains hopeful, with Tourism Australia's Robin Mack emphasizing China's importance as the second-largest source market for visitors and the largest in terms of total visitor expenditure. Despite the current slowdown, the industry is confident in the long-term prospects, with Tourism Research Australia forecasting significant growth in Chinese tourism over the next five years. The recovery is expected to be gradual, with the Australian Open and Lunar New Year holidays providing a boost in January and February. The presence of Mandopop superstar Jay Chou at the Australian Open, for instance, generated significant online interest and engagement. However, the slow recovery is partly due to China's domestic economic priorities and government policies, which encourage domestic travel over outbound trips. Despite these challenges, Tourism Australia continues to invest in promotional efforts in China, aiming to rebuild demand and attract Chinese travelers to Australia.
