Dave Grohl's Unlikely Musical Journey: The Foo Fighters Song He Can't Stand!
It's truly remarkable that Dave Grohl, after the profound loss of Kurt Cobain, not only continued making music but also built the incredibly successful Foo Fighters. Imagine the emotional toll of losing such a pivotal figure; many would understandably retreat from music altogether. Yet, Grohl found a way to channel his grief and passion into stadiums filled with adoring fans, a testament to his resilience and love for performing. However, with such meteoric rise to fame right from the start, it's no surprise that some behind-the-scenes moments might not have been his proudest.
Even before they had officially released a full album, the Foo Fighters were navigating the typical early-band struggles. Recording in his own house in 1999 might not have been the trendiest move at the time, but the resulting album, There Is Nothing Left to Lose, served as a beacon of light through those challenging periods. While not every track is overtly cheerful, the album showcases Grohl's growing confidence as a songwriter. However, the album's overall sound was a departure from what many hard rock enthusiasts might have expected. Although the band shone as a trio, many songs leaned towards a more accessible sound, much like the hit ‘Learn to Fly’. While ‘Learn to Fly’ was far from a bad song, Grohl's apparent dissatisfaction with its pop-radio success hinted at an even stronger aversion to another track that followed: ‘Next Year’.
But here's where it gets controversial... While there's nothing inherently wrong with ‘Next Year’, and in some ways, it's arguably stronger than ‘Learn to Fly’, Grohl himself has expressed significant disdain for it. The guitar riff is deceptively simple, but the open chords and beautiful harmonies evoke a sound reminiscent of The Eagles or even The Beatles' *Rubber Soul. Yet, for someone who reportedly wasn't a fan of *The Eagles**, this stylistic similarity clearly bothered him.
And this is the part most people miss... Grohl famously described ‘Next Year’ as a "piece of shit!" and "so stupid!" He admitted that while some of his songs are "jewels," others are merely "hiccups or skips." This candid self-criticism, though perhaps predictable from someone who admired heavier bands like Slayer and Celtic Frost, highlights his high standards and his evolving artistic identity. It’s a fascinating contrast to his undeniable talent for crafting accessible, melodic rock, as seen in tracks like ‘Ain’t It the Life’, which could have easily found a home on 1970s AM radio – a point underscored by their later cover of Gerry Rafferty’s ‘Baker Street’.
Looking ahead, the groundwork laid by ‘Next Year’ arguably paved the way for future Foo Fighters albums, including the ambitious In Your Honor. Even if he didn't realize it then, Grohl was experimenting and expanding the sonic possibilities of his songwriting, discovering that his musical world extended far beyond just loud guitars.
