To survive, gig workers are forced to become financial strategists. Hadi, who also chairs the App Drivers & Couriers Union, advocates for greater transparency, demanding access to detailed pay information for each job. He stresses the need to meticulously track time and expenses to make informed decisions about which jobs to accept.
The Challenges of Dynamic Wages
Drivers like Milo Sterlini, a moped delivery driver, leverage local knowledge to their advantage. He knows which restaurants offer quick service, allowing him to maximize the number of deliveries he completes. He juggles multiple apps – sometimes up to five – to find the most profitable jobs. But even with these strategies, the financial pressures are real.
And this is the part most people miss... The costs of gig work extend beyond fuel and vehicle maintenance. Drivers must also consider the cost of equipment. Sterlini, who also works as a full-time electrician, relies on gig work to cover London's high housing costs. He also notes the reduction in bonuses offered by food delivery apps since he started in 2022.
The Shift in Pay Structures
When Hadi first joined Uber, the pay structure was straightforward, and bonuses were generous. However, the situation has changed. “It was honey at first, but now it’s vinegar,” he says. This shift underscores the evolving dynamics of the gig economy, where initial incentives can erode over time.
The Human Cost and Legal Battles
Researchers have also pointed out the negative effects of algorithmic pricing on worker well-being. Alex Wood, an assistant professor at the University of Cambridge, highlights the risks to health and safety during surge periods, leading to “shockingly high levels of anxiety.”
Legal battles are ongoing regarding whether gig economy apps should pay their workers the national minimum wage. In 2023, the Supreme Court ruled that Deliveroo drivers were not entitled to minimum wage and holiday pay, as they were classified as independent contractors.
The Road Ahead
Uber emphasizes the flexibility it offers drivers, providing transparency on earnings. The company is collaborating with the GMB union, which advocates for pay based on time and distance, rather than dynamic wages.
Controversy Alert: Some platforms have challenged services like Rodeo, which helps drivers track data and identify profitable jobs. Alfie Pearce-Higgins, co-founder of Rodeo, highlights the importance of transparency for workers to make informed decisions. Deliveroo, however, blocked Rodeo from accessing app data in 2023.
A new Fair Work Agency, launching in April 2026, will have increased power to address employment violations, such as underpayment. The FT-backed Financial Literacy and Inclusion Campaign (FT FLIC) is also stepping in, planning to provide financial learning materials tailored to gig workers' unique income challenges.
