In a historic move, four astronauts have embarked on their return journey to Earth after a medical issue forced an early end to their mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). This marks NASA's very first medical evacuation in its history of human spaceflight.
Captured live by NASA’s video feed, American astronauts Mike Fincke and Zena Cardman, along with Russian cosmonaut Oleg Platonov and Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui, undocked from the ISS at 2220 GMT on Wednesday, concluding a five-month stay in orbit.
Before setting off for home, Cardman reflected on their experience: "Our timing of this departure is unexpected, but what was not surprising to me was how well this crew came together as a family to help each other and just take care of each other.” Her words highlight the strength of teamwork in challenging situations.
While NASA has chosen not to reveal the specific health concern affecting one of the crew members, they have reassured the public that the situation is not classified as an emergency. Rob Navias, a representative from NASA, confirmed on Wednesday that the affected astronaut was stable and remained so throughout the process.
The SpaceX Dragon capsule carrying the astronauts is anticipated to splash down off the coast of California at approximately 0840 GMT on Thursday. Fincke, who serves as the pilot of SpaceX Crew-11, conveyed a sense of reassurance through social media, stating, "First and foremost, we are all OK. Everyone on board is stable, safe, and well cared for. This was a deliberate decision to allow the right medical evaluations to happen on the ground, where the full range of diagnostic capability exists. It’s the right call, even if it’s a bit bittersweet." This emphasizes the importance of making informed decisions regarding health, even when they are difficult.
Interestingly, while computer models suggested that a medical evacuation from the ISS could occur every three years, this is the first instance in NASA's 65 years of operation. Historically, however, the Russian space program has had to contend with such emergencies; for example, in 1985, Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Vasyutin experienced a serious illness that necessitated an early return from the Salyut 7 space station.
Originally, the Crew-11 team was scheduled to remain on the ISS until mid-February when they were due to be replaced by another crew. However, James Polk, NASA’s chief health and medical officer, indicated that concerns about “lingering risk” and the uncertainty surrounding the health issue prompted the decision for an earlier return.
Meanwhile, American astronaut Chris Williams and Russian cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev, who arrived at the space station in November via a Russian Soyuz spacecraft, will continue their mission aboard the ISS.
In the interim, until SpaceX is able to transport another crew, NASA will temporarily halt any routine or emergency spacewalks, a task that requires a two-person team with backup support from fellow crew members inside the ISS.
NASA and the Russian Roscosmos space agency collaborate closely on the ISS, exchanging roles in transporting astronauts between countries—this cooperation remains one of the few areas of positive interaction between the United States and Russia.
Since its continuous habitation began in 2000, the ISS has exemplified international collaboration, bringing together astronauts from Europe, Japan, the United States, and Russia.
Amit Kshatriya, a senior official at NASA, commended the evacuated astronauts for their preparedness in handling unforeseen medical incidents, showcasing the training they received for such scenarios.
