In a bold move to tackle the rising tide of online fraud, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) is taking the fight nationwide. With a focus on public awareness, the NCCE aims to educate and empower citizens against this insidious threat.
Mr. Robert Kwesi Boame, the Oti Regional Director of NCCE, shared his concerns with the Ghana News Agency (GNA). He revealed that intelligence reports indicate a disturbing surge in fraudulent activities, with fake online shops and impersonation of legitimate companies on the rise.

NCCE's strategy involves integrating online fraud awareness into existing civic education programs. Mr. Boame explained, "Our regional and district directors have been tasked with this important mission. We must ensure citizens are vigilant and take necessary precautions."
The sensitisation campaign will emphasize the need for thorough verification. Citizens are urged to check the identities of online shops and companies before making any payments. Safe internet practices, cross-checking information on trusted platforms, and reporting suspected fraud to the authorities are also key aspects of the campaign.

The financial impact of online fraud is staggering. Reports suggest that victims lost approximately GH¢2.4 million in the first quarter of 2024, which skyrocketed to GH¢4.4 million in the same period of 2025 - an increase of a whopping 83%.
Mr. Boame cautioned that these figures are likely to rise during the festive season, urging the public to remain vigilant and cautious.
