The NHS is bracing for a challenging winter as hospital flu cases surge by 55% in a week, reaching record levels for this time of year. According to NHS figures, the number of flu patients in English hospitals has skyrocketed from 1,717 to an average of 2,660 per day last week. This marks a significant jump from the previous year, when the number was 1,861, and a stark contrast to 2023, when it was a mere 402. The NHS's national medical director, Prof. Meghana Pandit, warns that this unprecedented surge in flu cases is pushing the healthcare system to its limits, resembling a worst-case scenario for the season.
The peak of the flu season in England last winter saw 5,408 patients, and the winter of 2022-23 reached 5,441. With these alarming statistics, the NHS is gearing up for a demanding period ahead, leaving many questions about the impact on healthcare resources and patient care.
