The PDP Crisis Deepens: Fayose Urges New Factional Leader to Address Party Injustices
The political landscape of Nigeria is once again stirring as Ayodele Fayose, the former governor of Ekiti State, publicly congratulated Mohammed Abdulrahman, the newly appointed factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Abdulrahman, whose appointment comes in the wake of a schism within the party, was selected by a group of loyalists to the Federal Capital Territory's Minister, Nyesom Wike.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Fayose expressed his hope that Abdulrahman would leverage his new role to mend the fractures within the party and restore trust among its members. "I extend my congratulations to Alhaji Mohammed Abdulrahman on becoming the new chairman of the PDP. It is crucial that he works towards unifying the party and rebuilding confidence among its base," he remarked.
Ramping Tensions Within PDP
The internal turmoil within the PDP escalated on Saturday evening, as Wike’s faction announced the suspension of the party’s National Chairman, Umar Damagum. This faction, led by Samuel Anyanwu, the national secretary who had been expelled by the PDP’s National Working Committee earlier that day, took a bold step by declaring Damagum and five other National Working Committee (NWC) members suspended for a period of 30 days. They are also required to appear before the party's disciplinary committee to defend their actions.
During a press conference following his suspension, Anyanwu alleges incompetence and financial misconduct against Damagum, in addition to his failure to respect judicial rulings. This press briefing also announced that Abdulrahman, the Vice Chairman for North Central, would step in as the acting national chairman during this tumultuous period. At the time of writing, the suspended chairman, Damagum, and the other NWC members had not yet made any public comments regarding their suspension. Additionally, the PDP Governors Forum and the Board of Trustees remained silent on the situation.
The Roots of the Factionalization
The rift within the PDP became increasingly apparent after the 2023 general elections, as the party now finds itself divided into two factions—one firmly loyal to Minister Wike. Notably, while Wike is a member of the PDP, he is currently serving in the administration of President Bola Tinubu, a member of the rival All Progressives Congress (APC), which some critics have labeled as detrimental to party unity.
The controversy arose largely due to disagreements concerning the upcoming national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16. This event is essential as it aims to establish fresh leadership for the PDP and might set the direction for the selection of its presidential candidate for the 2027 elections. The Wike faction opposes this convention on the grounds that the party had not conducted valid state congresses, a prerequisite outlined in the PDP Constitution before proceeding with a national convention.
This conflict led to legal action, as Judge James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered a halt to the scheduled convention. The ruling highlighted the potential violation of constitutional laws, electoral guidelines from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the PDP Constitution, insisting that the party must adhere to all necessary protocols, including issuing a statutory 21-day notice before moving forward.
Despite the court's injunction, PDP leadership announced intentions to appeal the decision, which sparked further tension within the party. Following the court's order, Wike convened a meeting with PDP stakeholders and former governors aligned with him, celebrating the decision against the planned convention.
In turn, the NWC held an emergency meeting leading to the suspension of Anyanwu and several other individuals associated with Wike. While the spokesperson for the NWC did not detail the specific reasons for these suspensions, it is generally believed they are rooted in anti-party activities. Discontented by these developments, Anyanwu's faction hit back by declaring the suspension of Damagum and others.
An Appeal for Reconciliation and Justice
In his message of congratulations, Fayose emphasized the need for Abdulrahman to rectify perceived injustices against various state factions. "It is essential for him to examine the injustices that occurred in states like Ekiti and others and take steps to correct them according to both the party’s constitution and existing court rulings," he stated.
Fayose also advocated for collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure a credible national convention takes place. "He must be a team-oriented leader, enabling a new National Working Committee to emerge through a legitimate National Convention, which should commence immediately after resolving the outstanding state and zone congresses, especially those found in violation of court rulings," he advised. While Fayose did not elaborate on the specific injustices, his remarks tie back to the PDP's failure to properly conduct state congresses prior to the national convention.
