Jones emerged as a standout after being a 2022 third-round pick from the University of Connecticut. The 26-year-old had to shoulder an expanded load this season when Nnamdi Madubuike went down with a season-ending neck injury in Week 2, thrusting Jones into a larger role. Through 12 games, he’s posted 34 tackles, six tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery, demonstrating the kind of disruptive presence the Ravens value up front.
This contract lands a week after Baltimore extended tight end Mark Andrews to a three-year deal. The team has been active this offseason, already extending safety Kyle Hamilton in August and negotiating terms with running back Derrick Henry and wide receiver Rashod Bateman earlier in the spring. Jones’s situation, however, carried a nuance that could have changed his path to free agency.
Under the new CBA complications, Jones did not accrue a season, leaving him with only three credited years. If he’d hit the open market, he might have been limited to a restricted free-agent route unless the Ravens matched a tender. In that scenario, a second-round RFA tender could have cost roughly $6 million. The NFL Players Association even filed a grievance on Jones’s behalf, expecting a hearing on Thursday. Yet the compromise came first, as Jones and his agent Jared Fox, working with the Ravens, sealed the extension and the grievance was dropped.
A similar pattern emerged last year with Rashod Bateman, who signed a short-term deal after losing an accrued season when he started training camp on the reserve/did not report list. The Ravens then inked a more substantial extension a year later. Jones’s deal arrives just months before he would have likely become eligible as either a restricted or unrestricted free agent under the grievance ruling.
For general manager Eric DeCosta, this is a significant win. Jones, given his youth and skill set, would likely have drawn substantial interest on the open market if he’d reached free agency. With Madubuike’s future status uncertain, Baltimore couldn’t afford to lose both interior anchors. This signing also represents another major checkbox in DeCosta’s offseason to-do list.
Still, the Ravens must navigate a broader cap landscape. Lamar Jackson’s contract looms, with his salary-cap figure swelling to $74.5 million this offseason. Baltimore also has several notable pending free agents, including center Tyler Linderbaum, tight end Isaiah Likely, fullback Patrick Ricard, punter Jordan Stout, and newly acquired players Alohi Gilman and Dre’Mont Jones.
Before this deal, Jones and Linderbaum were arguably the two biggest pending decisions for Baltimore. The extension for Jones signals a clear message: the Ravens intend to protect their interior core as they pursue a competitive window, even as questions about the quarterback position and cap commitments linger.
