Reading 2100 Steam Locomotive: Successful FRA Test and Restoration Journey (2026)

A historic locomotive is ready to reclaim its former glory! The Reading Company's 4-8-4 locomotive, numbered 2100, has achieved a significant milestone in its journey back to life. On February 26 and 27, this mighty engine passed a crucial steam test under the watchful eyes of the Federal Railroad Administration in Cleveland, Ohio.

The test, a stationary affair, pushed the locomotive to its limits, reaching a full operating steam pressure of 240 psi. This success marks a giant leap forward in the restoration efforts led by the American Steam Railroad Preservation Association (ASRPA). But here's where it gets fascinating: the engine's history is a tale of expansion and rebirth.

Originally built in the railroad's shops in 1945, 2100 was an expansion of a Baldwin 2-8-0 locomotive. It served faithfully until the 1960s. In 1975, it and its sister, 2101, were acquired by Ross Rowland. While 2101 was restored for the American Freedom Train, 2100 provided the necessary parts. After a brief restoration in the 1980s, 2100 moved to Ontario and Washington State, where it operated briefly in the 2000s. And this is the part most people miss—it's been a long journey home for this locomotive.

Now, with the steam test complete, the ASRPA team can focus on the final stages of restoration. They will reassemble the locomotive and rename it 250, honoring the American Freedom Train livery worn by its sister engine in the 1970s. And there's more! The public can be a part of this journey by donating to the ASRPA, ensuring this piece of history stays alive for future generations.

Controversial Interpretation: Some might argue that the locomotive's history of being used for parts and its relocation across states could be seen as a controversial aspect of its preservation. Is it ethical to restore a locomotive with such a complex past? The debate is open, and we invite you to share your thoughts in the comments.
