Red Wings' Larkin Scores in OT After Olympic Heroics: 'We Just Hung in There' (2026)

The Olympic hero continues his winning streak!

Dylan Larkin, the captain of the Detroit Red Wings and a recent Olympic gold medalist, is on a roll. His overtime heroics secured a crucial 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators, showcasing his resilience and skill.

In a thrilling overtime period, Larkin won a crucial faceoff, setting up a beautiful play with teammate Lucas Raymond. Raymond's precise pass found Larkin, who outmaneuvered Ottawa's goalie Linus Ullmark with a slick backhand shot, securing the win at 1:50 into overtime.

"We just kept fighting," Larkin shared with FanDuel Sports Network. "We weren't at our best early on, but our game improved as it progressed. I felt like we played some of our best hockey in the second and third periods. It's always tough to play in Ottawa, but we weathered the storm and earned a massive two points."

Larkin's post-Olympic schedule has been hectic, but he insists he's feeling good. "It's a different atmosphere compared to the Olympic gold medal game against Canada, but that goal was massive for our team. Being back with the guys has been great, and they've been incredibly supportive since my return. Scoring that goal felt truly special."

Coach Todd McLellan anticipated Larkin's impact, despite the demanding schedule. "I watched other Olympians play yesterday, and they made a difference. Their nervous systems and thought processes were at their peak. We need to ensure Larkin gets some rest; otherwise, it might catch up with him in a few games. But he's learned from last year's tournament, and tonight he had an incredible game."

With this goal, Larkin surpassed Sergei Fedorov as the Red Wings' all-time leader in overtime goals, with 13.

The Red Wings (34-19-6) regained their second-place position in the Atlantic Division, largely thanks to goaltender John Gibson's 26 saves. Gibson's performance was crucial as the team adjusted to game play after the Olympic break.

Gibson emphasized the difference between practice and actual games: "Simulating games is one thing, but nothing beats being out there. It's great to be playing again. I just focus on playing my game and keeping the puck out of the net. That's how I give our team a chance to win."

Gibson has been a consistent performer since December 1st, statistically and on the ice. "We have confidence in Gibson; he gives us a chance to win every night," McLellan said. "Sometimes goaltenders need to buy time for the team to find their rhythm, and tonight was definitely one of those nights. He was solid until the very end."

Larkin and Ottawa's Brady Tkachuk, both Team USA teammates, traded goals throughout the game. Larkin's 27th goal tied the game 1-1 early in the second period.

"We started to gain momentum and control the puck in the offensive zone more than we have in a while," Larkin said of the power-play goal's impact.

Later in the second period, Ottawa's Tkachuk was penalized for misconduct after an incident with Simon Edvinsson, who returned to the lineup after missing seven games due to a knee injury. Tkachuk continued to engage with Edvinsson even while Edvinsson was in the penalty box, leading to the misconduct penalty.

Tkachuk opened the scoring in the first period with his 15th goal, a wrist shot on the power play that beat Gibson.

The Red Wings' victory showcases their depth and resilience, with Larkin's leadership and Gibson's goaltending playing pivotal roles.

But here's where it gets interesting: Will Larkin's Olympic success translate into a strong finish for the Red Wings? And how will Gibson's recent form impact the team's overall performance? These are questions that will be answered as the season progresses.
