Imagine a world where continents unite to tackle global challenges – that's the essence of the African Union–European Union Summit! This year, the spotlight shines on Luanda, Angola, as it hosts the experts meeting in preparation for the 7th summit, scheduled for November 24–25, 2025. The Sahrawi Republic made its presence felt at the experts meeting, with Ambassador Lamine Baali, the Sahrawi Permanent Representative to the African Union, and Hamdi El Khalil Mayara, the Sahrawi Ambassador to Angola, representing their nation. This gathering is a crucial prelude to the main event, where Heads of State and Government from both unions will convene.
And this is the part most people miss... The Sahrawi Republic is gearing up for high-level participation in the summit itself. A delegation led by President Brahim Ghali, alongside the Minister of Foreign Affairs and other key officials, will represent the Sahrawi Republic. The summit will be a meeting ground for leaders from across the African Union and the European Union.
So, what's on the agenda? The seventh summit will delve into critical strategic issues, all within the framework of the partnership between the two continents. These include strengthening the commitment to multilateralism, solidarity, and joint action to address common challenges. Other topics include peace, security, and good governance, with a focus on supporting African mechanisms for conflict prevention and post-conflict reconstruction.
Furthermore, discussions will cover development and economic prosperity, including the green and digital transitions, investment, sustainable energy, infrastructure, human development, education and mobility programs, youth and culture, women’s empowerment, social inclusion, environmental cooperation, and efforts to address climate change and protect the planet. It's a comprehensive agenda, highlighting the breadth of the partnership.
The summit will be co-chaired by João Lourenço, President of the Republic of Angola and Chairperson of the African Union, and António Costa, President of the European Council. Also present will be Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.
But here's where it gets controversial... This summit marks the 25th anniversary of the African–European partnership. It's a time to celebrate decades of collaboration in peace, development, innovation, education, and humanitarian action. The previous summit, the sixth AU–EU Summit, took place in Brussels in 2022, and was attended by the President of the Sahrawi Republic, Mr. Ibrahim Ghali, and a high-level delegation.
