San Francisco Giants Sign Sam Hentges: 2026 MLB Season Outlook (2026)

Big moves brewing in the Bay Area bullpen — and Giants fans will want to pay attention.

Just in time for the holiday weekend, the San Francisco Giants have reportedly landed veteran left-handed reliever Sam Hentges on a one-year, $1.4 million deal. The first report came from FanSided’s Robert Murray on Thursday, citing a source close to the negotiations.

Hentges, who has spent his entire four-year MLB career with the Cleveland Guardians, comes to San Francisco with a record of 206.2 innings pitched across 168 games. The 29-year-old southpaw unfortunately missed all of the 2025 season while recovering from shoulder and knee surgeries — but that didn’t stop him from catching the attention of multiple teams looking for bullpen depth.

The last time fans saw Hentges on the mound was during the 2024 season, where he quietly assembled one of his most efficient stretches yet — a 3.04 ERA, 27 strikeouts, and just five walks over 23.2 innings. Not bad for a pitcher who had shifted full-time into a relief role only a couple of years before.

And that’s where his story gets more interesting. Since transitioning out of starting roles in 2022, Hentges has maintained a strong 2.93 ERA in 138 appearances — proof that the bullpen move may have been the perfect career pivot. His standout season came right at that transition point in 2022: a 3–2 record, 2.32 ERA, and 1.3 WAR over 62 innings. Those numbers placed him among the more reliable lefty relievers in the American League at the time.

But here’s where it gets controversial... the Giants’ decision to bring in Hentges seems linked to their recent move to non-tender fellow left-handed reliever Joey Lucchesi. That choice puzzled some fans, given that Lucchesi turned in a respectable 3.76 ERA last season and held left-handed hitters to a low .219 average with a .598 OPS in 38 outings. Was the choice purely financial, or do the Giants see something in Hentges they believe Lucchesi lacked?

Either way, this move reshapes the left-handed side of San Francisco’s bullpen. Alongside Hentges, the Giants now feature Erik Miller, Matt Gage, and Reiver José Sanmartín as part of what could become one of the deepest southpaw groups in the National League heading into the 2026 season.

Some fans call this a savvy comeback signing. Others worry it’s a gamble on a pitcher fresh off surgery. So, what do you think — smart investment or risky recovery bet? Sound off in the comments and join the debate.
