Severe Weather Alert: Flash Floods and Heavy Rain Impact NSW Coast (2026)

Brace yourselves, because the NSW coast is enduring a battering! Severe thunderstorms, relentless heavy rainfall, and ferocious winds are keeping the State Emergency Service (SES) incredibly busy. Let's dive into what's happening and why it matters.

Overnight, residents of Narrabeen, a suburb in Sydney's Northern Beaches, faced evacuation due to life-threatening flash flooding. The SES issued an evacuation warning for the Narrabeen Lagoon area, including the Big4 Sydney Lakeside Holiday Park, as floodwaters surged. Thankfully, this has since been downgraded to a 'Watch and Act' alert, allowing residents to return with caution. An evacuation center was set up at Mona Vale Memorial Hall to assist those displaced.

The sheer volume of rain is staggering: the SES recorded nearly 260 millimeters of rain in the Northern Beaches alone! Dangerous flash flooding has also been detected near Mona Vale and Manly, which also has a 'Watch and Act' warning for its lagoon. But here's where it gets controversial... Is the current infrastructure capable of handling such intense weather events?

It's not just the coast bearing the brunt. Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains are also experiencing heavy rainfall, with some areas receiving up to 68 millimeters early this morning. The SES is also warning that parts of the Central Coast could be cut off due to rising floodwaters. A 'Watch and Act - Prepare to Isolate' warning is in place for Yarramalong and Dooralong, south-west of Morisset. Currently, there are six active flood warnings in effect.

SES Assistant Commissioner Sonya Oyston described the east coast as experiencing "extremely wild weather." The service has responded to over 1,400 incidents related to flash flooding and storm-related events, particularly in the Illawarra, Sydney, and Hunter regions.

Ms. Oyston mentioned that Sydney should anticipate similar conditions for the next 24 hours and into the early part of next week. However, there's a glimmer of hope: as the storm moves north, the Illawarra area might see some relief. And this is the part most people miss... the impact of these events on daily life.

Adding to the tragedy, a woman in the Illawarra region lost her life yesterday after a falling tree branch struck her car on Macquarie Pass.

Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Dean Narramore highlighted that warnings are focused from the Sydney metropolitan area to the western regions and the Blue Mountains, where a band of "very heavy, heavy rainfall" continues. He noted severe thunderstorm warnings with isolated falls of up to 60 to 80 millimeters within an hour, leading to flash flooding. This is expected to persist this morning before gradually easing to moderate rainfall this afternoon.

Sydney itself has received 112 millimeters of rain, while areas further north, such as Pearl Beach, Mackerel Beach, and the Woy Woy area, have experienced falls of 200 to 250 millimeters. The Central Coast and the far southern Hunter region are also areas of concern.

Public transport is also feeling the impact. Buses are replacing trains between Hornsby and Gosford on the Central Coast & Newcastle Line due to flooding on the tracks. The L1 Dulwich Hill Line light rail services are not running between Central and Convention, and buses are replacing L3 Kingsford Line light rail services between Moore Park and Kingsford due to flooding.

Ms. Oyston emphasized that volunteers have been working tirelessly, including conducting flood rescues. Over the last 24 hours, the SES has received requests for 20 flood rescues, mostly involving people driving through floodwaters. She urged holiday-makers and those unfamiliar with the roads to avoid travel if possible, stay indoors, and never enter floodwaters.
