A top Welsh surgeon has issued a stark warning about the 'life-changing' effects of a traditional cold remedy, highlighting the dangers of steam inhalation. The consultant, Jeremy Yarrow, warns that children are at the highest risk from this unproven home remedy, which involves inhaling steam from boiled water. Yarrow explains that bowls of scalding water can overturn without warning, causing severe burns to the face, chest, abdomen, and legs. These burns can lead to prolonged treatment, surgical intervention, and lifelong disfigurement and scarring, especially in children with thinner skin and less awareness of the danger. Despite the risks, Yarrow notes that steam inhalation lacks proven effectiveness, and a Cochrane medical review found no clear benefits for treating common colds and chest infections. He urges the public to avoid using steam inhalation and instead opt for safer alternatives, such as over-the-counter remedies or those prescribed by a doctor. In the event of a burn injury, Yarrow emphasizes the importance of quick action to reduce the potential for long-term injury or scarring, suggesting the '3Cs' method: cooling the burn with running cold tap water, removing clothing and jewelry, and calling for help. Additionally, he reminds people to take care when using hot water bottles, as they can also lead to burns and scalds.
